Comics: Literature or not?

By definition, a comic is (The following definitions have been taken from various sources): 

  • A sequence of panels that tells a story; 
  • A children’s and young people’s publication whose subject matter unfolds through series of drawings; 
  • A graphic, humorous or children’s story; 
  • A means of artistic and narrative expression that combines literature and drawing in order to:
    • Tell fictional or real stories 
    • Convey messages, values and social criticism 
    • Entertain children, young people and adults 
    • Educate 
  • A tool for communication, imagination and learning. 

  • Types of comics:
  • Humor, superhero, science fiction, horror, historical, educational. 
  • Comics everyone knows:
  • Asterix and Obelix, Tintin, Mort & Phil, Snoopy, Superman, Spiderman
  • Comic authors we should have in our personal libraries:
    Goscinny, Uderzo, Hergé, Ibáñez, Quino, Stan Lee
  • And a special mention: Maus by Art Spiegelman. 

With all this in mind: Are comics part of what we call literature, or not?
