Should translators restrict their activity and concentrate on a specific field?
Many would be willing to support this option with arguments such as:
Those who specialise on one field become experts in it. Repeated work on the same subject will lead to mastery. Why else would we speak of a “Jack-of-all-trades”?
The other option is to accept translations without restrictions – all the projects that come our way, regardless of topic or genre. This approach can be supported with the saying: “Variety is the spice of life”.
With expertise and research, almost any field can be tackled. True, we will not become masters in all of them, but that´s life. Besides, wouldn´t it be boring to deal with the same thematic monotony day after day?
So: Should we restrict ourselves, or cross borders and lembrace the unlimited?
